The PM’s Coordinator for Health announces increased surveillance at airports and daily monitoring to control the spread of monkeypox.
ISLAMABAD: Government Announces Comprehensive Strategy to Combat Mpox, Says Dr. Malik Mukhtar Ahmad
On Saturday, Dr. Malik Mukhtar Ahmad, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Health, revealed a comprehensive strategy developed by the government to safeguard the public from the monkeypox (mpox) virus. Addressing a press conference, Dr. Ahmad assured the public that there is no cause for alarm, as Pakistan has only reported a single case of mpox thus far.
Dr. Ahmad detailed the extensive measures being implemented across the country to manage and mitigate the risk of mpox. He emphasized that enhanced surveillance and screening protocols are now in place at all airports and entry points. These measures are designed to closely monitor and identify any potential cases of the virus as travelers arrive from regions with known outbreaks.
In addition to airport screening, laboratories in various provinces, including the federal capital, have been designated to handle mpox diagnoses. This strategic approach ensures that any suspected cases are promptly tested and confirmed, enabling a swift response to prevent further spread.
Dr. Ahmad noted that travelers arriving from countries with reported cases of mpox—such as those in Africa, the Americas, and the Gulf region—will be subjected to heightened scrutiny. This targeted monitoring is crucial for early detection and intervention, helping to prevent the virus from spreading within the country.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, both federal and provincial authorities have prioritized mpox prevention. Dr. Ahmad highlighted that the Ministry of Health is committed to continuous daily monitoring of the situation. The government remains vigilant and responsive to the evolving dynamics of the virus.
In maintaining a coordinated and effective response, Dr. Ahmad reported that the Ministry of Health is in constant communication with provincial health departments. Following the prime minister’s directives, a daily review meeting is conducted to assess the situation, implement necessary measures, and ensure that all protocols are being followed.
Dr. Ahmad urged the public to exercise caution, particularly if they or their family members have recently traveled to affected regions and are showing symptoms of mpox. He advised that individuals in such situations should seek medical attention from a qualified doctor and adhere to their recommendations to manage any symptoms effectively.
Providing further context on the global situation, Dr. Ahmad shared that approximately 99,000 cases of mpox have been reported worldwide, with 200 fatalities. He explained that symptoms of the virus typically appear within 10 to 15 days of exposure, and prolonged contact with an infected person significantly increases the risk of transmission.
To combat the spread of the virus, Dr. Ahmad recommended that patients be quarantined and treated with fever-reducing medications. This approach not only helps manage the symptoms but also reduces the likelihood of further transmission within the community.
The government’s strategy reflects a robust and proactive approach to managing the mpox threat. By implementing stringent surveillance, screening, and diagnostic measures, and maintaining close coordination with provincial health departments, Pakistan is taking significant steps to protect public health and prevent the virus from taking hold.
