Jamaat-e-Islami Chief Calls for Abolition of IPP Capacity Charges to Lower Electricity Bills, Announces Nationwide Strike

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has issued a call for the Sharif family to forgo capacity charges associated with their Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as a measure to reduce soaring electricity bills. Speaking at a press conference in Lahore on Tuesday, Rehman criticized the current energy situation, asserting that the burden imposed by these IPPs is unsustainable for the nation.

Rehman emphasized that the high cost of utility bills has severely impacted Pakistan’s economy and industrial sector. “We cannot continue to bear the financial strain imposed by these IPPs. If the Sharif family and the Mansha Group were to relinquish their annual capacity charges, the cost of electricity bills would significantly decrease,” he stated, highlighting a key area of concern for consumers and businesses alike.

The JI chief also expressed strong disapproval of the government’s response to the utility crisis. “Tomorrow, we will conduct a nationwide shutter-down strike. We refuse to accept the imposition of a tax of 30,000 rupees on some markets and 40,000 rupees on others,” Rehman declared. He criticized the government’s dismissal of the strike’s potential economic impact, arguing that the current state of affairs is already dire. “The government’s actions are wreaking havoc on our economy. They are destroying the very fabric of our financial stability,” he added.

Rehman assured that the protest is designed to force the government into reconsidering its policies. “Our protest efforts are aimed at compelling the government to back down. If we do not receive the relief we seek, we will persist with our strikes and continue consulting with traders to strategize future actions,” he warned. He indicated that the strike would also serve as a platform to develop a strategy for the ‘Give the People Their Rights’ campaign, focusing on peaceful protest and advocating for consumer rights.

In addition to addressing the electricity crisis, Rehman voiced strong support for the Baloch community, condemning recent violence in Balochistan. “We stand in solidarity with the Baloch people. We will not allow anyone to use the Baloch name to further India’s agenda. Those responsible for the selective killings in Balochistan are not just criminals; they are beasts and terrorists,” he said. Rehman accused these groups of being agents of foreign powers intent on destabilizing Pakistan. “They are working to weaken our country, and we will not let their malevolent plans succeed,” he asserted.

The JI chief’s remarks reflect a growing frustration among various segments of Pakistani society regarding economic policies and the ongoing conflict in Balochistan. The planned nationwide strike is expected to draw significant attention to these issues and amplify calls for governmental accountability and reform.
