Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has made a stark assertion regarding the state of governance in the province, stating that the provincial government has lost its authority. This declaration was made during a media interaction following Kundi’s visit to the Iqbal Academy Pakistan in Lahore.
Governor Kundi’s comments reflect growing concerns over the security and administrative challenges facing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He criticized the federal government for not taking decisive action, urging it to convene an All Parties Conference (APC) to address the escalating situation in the province. Kundi remarked, “We cannot change our neighbors, but we can improve the situation. The federal government must call an All Parties Conference on the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The events of May 9 were acts of treason that should not be compromised on, but after a year in jail, crocodile tears are being shed.”
The situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has indeed deteriorated significantly. The province is grappling with a surge in terrorism and extremism, with frequent attacks on security forces, including the army and police. Governor Kundi emphasized the severity of the current conditions, noting, “The province is currently in dire conditions, grappling with terrorism and extremism. Attacks on the army and police are occurring with increasing frequency.”
Reflecting on the province’s history, Kundi pointed out that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was handed over to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party in 2013 under relatively peaceful conditions. However, he accused the PTI government of failing to maintain this peace, stating, “We handed over a peaceful province to the PTI in 2013, but they have since restored the killers of APS children.”
Kundi’s criticisms were not limited to the state of security. He also leveled allegations against the PTI government, accusing it of prioritizing corruption over governance. He claimed that even PTI’s own ministers have spoken out against the rampant corruption within their ranks. Furthermore, Kundi accused the Chief Minister of being fearful of provincial assembly sessions, undermining the legislative process.
The dire security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been underscored by recent violent incidents. On Monday, a bomb attack carried out by individuals on a motorcycle in the Razmak subdivision of North Waziristan district resulted in the death of at least four people and injuries to eight others. This attack is part of a troubling pattern of target killings and militant assaults that have been on the rise in the region.
In response to the escalating security concerns, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a Cabinet Meeting to address the overall security and law and order situation in the country. During the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating terrorism. He stated, “There is no room for terrorism. The time has come to end it. We will provide the military with whatever resources it needs.” The Prime Minister’s comments highlight the federal government’s resolve to support the military in its fight against terrorism and restore stability to regions plagued by violence.
The situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continues to be a pressing issue, with political leaders and government officials grappling with how best to address the challenges facing the province. As violence and extremism persist, the call for a comprehensive and coordinated response remains critical.
