“Potential Cyclone ‘Asna’ Expected to Form in the Arabian Sea: Karachi and Surrounding Areas on Alert”

Cyclone Alert Issued as Potential Storm ‘Asna’ Develops in Arabian Sea

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a tropical cyclone alert due to the formation of a potential storm in the northeastern Arabian Sea and the Rann of Kutch region in India. The alert comes as a deep depression, characterized by a significant drop in atmospheric pressure, has been observed moving west-southwest over the past 12 hours.

Currently, this deep depression is located approximately 270 kilometers southeast of Karachi. The PMD’s latest reports indicate that the system is anticipated to continue its west-southwest trajectory and could potentially reach the northeastern Arabian Sea along Sindh’s coast by late tonight or early tomorrow morning. The meteorological conditions are favorable for the system to intensify into a tropical cyclone by tomorrow, given the conducive sea surface temperatures and upper-level divergence.

The initial forecast suggests that the cyclone, if it forms, could move towards the west-southwest, potentially impacting a range of regions in Sindh. These areas include Karachi Division, Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta, Sajawal, Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Jamshoro, and Dadu. The regions under threat are expected to experience heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms through 31 August.

Winds associated with the developing cyclone are predicted to reach speeds of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour. Consequently, sea conditions are expected to remain rough to very rough. Fishermen are strongly advised to avoid venturing into the sea until the warning period ends on 31 August to ensure their safety.

The PMD’s Cyclone Warning Centre is actively monitoring the evolving situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available. All relevant authorities and the public are urged to stay informed through official advisories and to follow any recommended precautions to minimize the impact of the cyclone.

In the event that the cyclone intensifies, it will be named “Asna,” a name proposed by Pakistan. The name “Asna” translates to “higher,” reflecting the anticipated strength and impact of the storm.

The PMD emphasizes the importance of preparedness in light of the potential cyclone. Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions, secure their properties, and stay tuned to official updates. Emergency services and local government authorities are on alert to manage any immediate impacts and provide assistance as needed.

As the situation develops, the PMD will continue to issue updates and advisories to keep the public informed about the progress of the cyclone and its potential effects. It is crucial for everyone in the affected regions to remain vigilant and follow the guidance provided by meteorological experts and local authorities.
